Make Your Own Mermaid with The Mudlark Puppeteers

Mermaids are fascinating creatures and exist in some form in every culture of the world. Join Master Puppeteer Pandora Gastelum in this fun-filled week exploring mermaid lore and creating your own puppet mermaid for costume and performance!


Students will be introduced to a selection of mermaid stories from around the world. Working with clay, cardboard, paper mache, wire and fabric each participant will create their own mermaid, or work as a team to build a group puppet. These puppets can range from the small to the giant, and may be created as a wearable costume. All participants will be invited to participate in the Mermaid Parade on Saturday September 5th at the new Woldenburg Riverfront Park! 


Workshop dates:

Sun July 26th 11a-2p This is storytelling and idea day!

We will explore mermaid imagery and make drawings of our designs. Each participant will be guided through different approaches to building puppet and will generate a materials list for the week ahead.

 Some snacks provided- bringing a snack and water bottle is encouraged.


The Mermaid Laboratory will be working with participants! 

 Mon July 27th, Tues July 28th Wed July 29th NO CLASS THURS! - Friday July 31st 5-8p 


Each student will bring their own mermaid to life as a backpack puppet, rod puppet, marionette or body costume. Comfortable, washable clothes for working are encouraged. 


Ages 21 and under. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. 

Max 25 participants


  • Used clothing, sheets, fabric remnants and pool noodles will make great building materials for our mermaids. Participants are encouraged to bring these along if they have them hanging about.


Participation fee suggested sliding scale $10-$20 per class
